India faced a critical question leading up to the T20 World Cup in June – the need for a reliable backup for the injury-prone Hardik Pandya. Hardik, a rare find in the world of cricket as a fast-bowling all-rounder, had been a crucial asset for India, reminiscent of the legendary Kapil Dev. However, his struggles with a back injury impacted India’s performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup, and his absence due to an ankle twist left the team imbalanced in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
To address this concern, India turned to Shivam Dube during the three-match series against Afghanistan. Making his debut in 2019 under similar circumstances, the 30-year-old was initially recalled for the home series against Australia in November the previous year. However, he remained on the sidelines throughout the five matches and was subsequently dropped for the South Africa tour. Dube received another chance in India’s final assignment before the T20 World Cup.
Dube’s return to the Indian team was prompted by his exceptional performance for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. The Mumbai all-rounder continued his splendid form with the bat against Afghanistan, securing back-to-back match-winning fifties and showcasing his prowess against spin bowlers. Additionally, he contributed with the ball, claiming two wickets in the three matches and ultimately earning the Player of the Series award in India’s 3-0 triumph over Afghanistan.
As India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid was pressed on whether Dube’s all-round abilities had impressed him for a spot in the final World Cup squad. While Dravid remained tight-lipped about Dube’s chances, he acknowledged being impressed by an “improved” Dube. Dravid commended Dube for showcasing his skills, emphasizing his ability to handle spin in the middle overs and acknowledging his bowling performance, albeit with a cautionary note about the challenges of bowling in a place like Bangalore.
Despite Dube’s stellar performance, Dravid made it clear that, regardless of Dube’s IPL 2024 showing, Hardik Pandya would remain the first-choice all-rounder for the World Cup, contingent on his ability to stay injury-free. However, Dube’s display provided India with a sense of relief, knowing they have a viable backup option if needed.
In reflecting on Dube’s performance, Dravid stated, “He has certainly put his hand up and said, ‘Look, here I am and these are the skills I possess, and if you are looking for something like that, I have got this ability.'”
Looking ahead, the series victory and Dube’s impactful contributions have not only bolstered India’s confidence but also added depth to their squad. While Hardik Pandya remains the linchpin, knowing that there’s a capable backup in Shivam Dube provides India with a strategic advantage and flexibility in their team composition for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The competition for spots in the final squad is undoubtedly fierce, and Dube’s resurgence adds an intriguing dynamic to India’s selection considerations.
